Poria (茯苓): a medicinal fungus formed beneath the soil

Poria is known as fú líng in Chinese medicine. This field note centres on where the material lives or grows, how it is collected, and what processing changes before it reaches professional practice.

Season 2, episode 1 excerpt: Poria · The Tale of Chinese Medicine Official Channel

Where it lives and how it grows

Poria is a wood-decaying fungus whose dense sclerotium develops underground around pine roots or prepared pine wood. Cultivation depends on sound wood, inoculation, soil moisture, drainage, and enough time for a substantial body to form out of sight.

Harvest

Growers probe and open the soil carefully because the crop is hidden. Mature sclerotia are lifted intact, with loose soil removed before they are taken for cutting and drying.

Processing

Fresh Poria is rested or sweated, cleaned, peeled as required, cut into blocks or slices, and dried. White inner material and darker outer layers may be separated and named differently.

Traditional uses and symptom patterns

Fu Ling is traditionally included in formulas for fluid-retention, digestive weakness, poor appetite, or restlessness patterns. Swelling, reduced urine, or persistent digestive symptoms can signal conditions that should be medically assessed.

What the evidence can and cannot say

The reviewed sources support source identity, material distinction, and the cultivation or processing account. They do not establish that this material is an effective treatment for a reader's symptoms; clinical recommendations, products, formulas, and doses remain outside this article.

Safety and interactions

Human interaction and pregnancy data are limited, and fungal identity matters. People with unexplained swelling, kidney disease, or medicines affecting fluid balance should not substitute Poria for medical assessment.
