Gua sha

A smooth-edged tool is drawn firmly across oiled skin, usually on the back, neck or shoulders. The skin often reddens — a harmless response that typically clears in a few days.

How long
Typically 10–20 minutes of gua sha, inside a longer visit.
What you wear
Only the area being treated is uncovered. Oil or balm goes on the skin, so loose clothes are kinder than silk. Warm towels or wipes are usually on hand afterwards.
Marks
Mild redness or temporary streaking is expected. It is not a cut. If you bruise easily or take medicine that affects bleeding, say so before they start.
What it feels like
A rhythmic, firm pressure that warms as they go. It should feel deep, not sharp. Ask them to ease off if it is too much.

What happens

  1. They look at the skin and ask about recent sun, rashes or medicines. This is one of the moments where a precise answer in English, translated carefully, matters.

  2. Oil is applied. The tool — stone, ceramic or horn, smooth-edged — is drawn in strokes. You hear roughly how long they intend to work.

  3. They pause if you ask. The companion stays so you can speak without mime.

  4. The oil is wiped. You are told what the redness usually does over the next days, and what to avoid if they have a view on that — always as their instruction, not ours.

We will not tell you what this will do for you. The practitioner speaks for themselves. We translate it, including when the answer is that they would rather not go ahead.

How a companion helps here

  • Redness on the neck or shoulders is visible in a T-shirt. Better to know that before a photograph or a swimming day.
  • If you take prescription medicine, the screening question on our form is there so this conversation happens before you travel, not at the table.
  • You can ask them to stop at pink rather than deep red. That request is ordinary.
