Ephedra herb and root (麻黄): two parts with sharply different risks
Ephedra herb and root is known as má huáng / má huáng gēn in Chinese medicine. This field note centres on where the material lives or grows, how it is collected, and what processing changes before it reaches professional practice.
Where it lives and how it grows
Ephedra is a tough, jointed shrub adapted to dry, exposed ground. Its green stems carry out much of the plant's photosynthesis, while a persistent root system anchors it and reaches scarce moisture.
Harvest
Above-ground stems and roots are collected separately and at different stages. Removing roots destroys the plant, so root harvest has a different ecological cost from cutting mature stems.
Processing
Stems are cleaned, cut, and dried; roots are cleaned and dried as a separate medicine. The two materials must not be substituted for one another simply because they come from the same plant.
Traditional uses and symptom patterns
The stems are traditionally associated with exterior cold, wheezing, and absence of sweating, while the roots are associated with unwanted sweating. These descriptions are not a basis for home diagnosis.
What the evidence can and cannot say
The reviewed sources support source identity, material distinction, and the cultivation or processing account. They do not establish that this material is an effective treatment for a reader's symptoms; clinical recommendations, products, formulas, and doses remain outside this article.
Safety and interactions
Ephedrine alkaloids can raise heart rate and blood pressure and have been linked with stroke, seizures, and other serious events. Ephedra products are restricted in several markets and should not be self-prescribed.
